Valentines ideas – travel, food, gift ideas in the Portland, Oregon region
Valentines ideas for Oregon initially made us think of ideas for outdoor experiences and the potential to combine them with romantic dinners and wine. One thing we love, apart from serving perfectly aerated wine by the glass using the WineWeaver aerator, is the idea of romance. Oregon is the third state in the USA when it comes to producing wine and there are over 303 wineries in the state. With so much good wine opportunities abound to have a wonderfully creative Valentine’s idea. Needless to say, we have had to limit ourselves for this article on Valentines ideas but we will be back to explore more about Oregon wineries in the future.
Portland in Oregon has a population of around 500,000 and a long history so one of our Valentine’s ideas for couples was brunch, maybe with a glass of champagne. Lunch is great but to make it a special day consider joining historian Doug Kenck-Crispin on his Portland Sinful Walking Tour-Shanghaiers, Saloons and Skullduggery (Venue: Floyd’s Coffee on 118 NW Crouch St, Portland, OR97209). Following the entertaining walk and having worked up an appetite you could add in a romantic dinner for two at your favorite restaurant in the evening. If your Valentines idea is to try something more local to the walk or new with music you could try Camellia Lounge (at 510 NW 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97209) which has a little French twist to it with vocalists covering Retro French Pop.
On the topic of food and wine as Valentine’s ideas for him and Valentine’s ideas for her, why not look at the Cerulean Wine Bar at 1439 NW Marshall St, Portland. Cerulean have a chocolate and wine pairing Valentine Day special with a two for one wine flights and chocolates. They also have a candle-lit space, shared with the White Space Gallery (art being another long-term Valentine’s day gift idea), in a 100 year old building with high wood ceilings and exposed brickwork. With all that art, it should prove to be a romantic Valentines Day.

What about Valentines Day ideas for those of us who want to go out with friends? How about looking at Beast with Chef Naomi Pomeroy (what a great wine based name, we love it). Naomi comes with plenty of accolades- Oprah magazine named her one of Top 10 Women to Watch in the next decade and she has been a judge in Knife Fight on Esquire Network. Beast on 5425 NorthEast 30th Ave, Portland, OR97111 has dinner for two or four with wine pairings. Alternatively, why not take your own favorite wine and give your friends a treat with a wine aerator to celebrate. It is a Valentines gift which will make a momento and is designed to bring out the full flavors and smells of your wine choices instantly. Yes, Beast does allow you to bring your favourite wine to the restaurant for a small corkage.
Weekend Valentines Day Ideas
This year we are all so lucky, Valentine’s day falls on a weekend so what better than making a weekend event of if with wine tasting, spa treats and of course a night in a hotel with dinner and wine.
Skamania Lodge in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is offering some special packages for Valentine’s weekend (actually they cover from February 5th through to 29th). Imagine a valentine gift with the fire burning, a 50 minute couples massage, flowers and chocolate teats (Lover’s Retreat) or taking dinner in The Cascade Dining room or River Rock Lounge after a fine glass of wine aerated though a WineWeaver sitting in front of a fire (A Night to Remember). If you and your partner like flexibility they have a package for you called Passionate Escape which gives you a $100 resort credit so you can surprise you partner and then they can choose what to spend the credit on in the resort. If you love skiing and the outdoor life, well there is also plenty to choose from close by.
Another great Valentines Day idea is organising a wine tasting tour. You could visit the Cerulean in Hood River at 304 Oak Street OR97031) and Stoltz Vineyards on 514 State Street, OR97031. Hood River also has the Springhouse Cellar Winery at 13 Railroad Ave and Stave & Stone Winery is at 210 Oak Street (so you are beginning to see that you can walk from one to the next). Finally, Pines wine tasting 1852 can be found at 202 Cascade Ave Ste B, Hood River, Or97031 and close by is the Naked Winery tasting room on the Corner of 2nd & Cascade.
Make sure you call them first and book a very good lunch (without wine) before you commence your wine tasting tour. During your wine tasting experience ask how long the wine has been open to assess the aeration required if you buy and open your own bottle at home. If the winery opens a new bottle for you take your aerator to ensure you get the best out of your wine. Our final tip, is book a cab back to the hotel and take a rest before your fine dining experience. If you both want an extra special Valentines Day you could look for a wine tour as there are also many options on this including limo options such as Vino Ventures, Wine Dirt, Explore the Gorge or Aspen Limo tours to name a few. This option might be more expensive but you will be able to relax and let them sort out your wine tasting event for you.
