Tomorrow (Saturday 11 August 2012) sees the start of Cowes Week – a wonderful annual British sailing regatta that takes place on the Solent in the small town of Cowes, Isles of Wight.
If you’re not familiar with this event, it is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events having started way back in 1826! What with the Olympics in London this summer the UK have certainly had a bumper year of sporting highlights and this superb sailing regatta in Cowes Week will be a key highlight of the British Sporting Summer.
The event will see over 1,000 boats in up to forty different handicaps, one-design and multihull classes race every day for eight days. This unique sailing regatta will involve a complete mixture of classic and uber-modern designs and participants will range just as widely with participants from Olympic sailors through to world class yachtsmen and weekend sailboaters.
Cowes is notorious for having a fun and vibrant festival atmosphere with spectators in their hundreds of thousands flocking to see the racing event over the course of the week.
If you plan on going along, spectators can grab plenty of shore-side racing action, as well as taking to visitor boats and helicopters rides for optimal viewing points and close-up action!
